The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County holds more than 33 million specimens, artifacts, and objects in its collections. The collections have scientific and cultural values and content that make them one of the nation's most important animal, mineral, fossil and anthropological collections. The collections support programs and research in Anthropology, Botany, Geology, History, and Zoology. Overall, the collections are the fourth largest in the US.
The Section of Mammals houses approximately 95,700 research specimens ranging in size from shrews to whales. The marine mammal component of the
collection is ranked second in the world.
Its collection of marmots consists of 46 specimens representing 3 identified species of American Marmots.
