Nikolskii Born:May 25, 1939 in Moscow

Citizenship: Russia University Degrees : Dr.Sc. (biology); Prof. 1967 : I graduated from the Chair of Vertebrate Zoology of the Biological faculty of the Moscow Lomonosov State University.
1970 : I completed a postgraduate course at the same Chair under the guidance of prof. N.P.Naumov.
1971 : I defended a Candidate Degree thesis (Ph.D.) on the subject "Distant sound signalling in diurnal rodents of open areas".
1982 : defended his Doctor thesis (Doctor of science, Biology) on the subject "Acoustic signals of mammals in the evolution process".

Employment

Since 1967 to 1990 : i have worked as a researcher at the Vertebrate Zoology Chair, Biology department, Moscow University.
Since 1900 to 1992 : I was appointed the Head of the Main Department for the Specially Protected Areas' Problems of the Ministry of the Protection of Nature, was responsible for the whole system of nature reserves of the Soviet Union. From 1990 to 1992 I was the Vice-Chair of the Commission on the National Parks of the IUCN.
Since 1992 up to now : I am professor of the System Ecology Department of the Ecological Faculty of the Russian University of Peoples' Friendship.



Scientific activity

My main scientific interests are connected with studying ecology, behaviour, systematic and biogeography of the land mammals. I have published 200 scientific works, 3 monographs included. On my initiative and with my active participation in field conditions a unique collection of mammals' sound signals was made on the territories of the Soviet Union and Mongolia. In 1990 I was elected as a People's deputy of the USSR. Worked as a Chairman of the Subcommittee on the Nature Protected Areas of the Committee on Ecology of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR.
