The distribution of the Marmot in the French Alps was determined in 1988-1989 by means of a questionnaire sent to hunters, foresters, and naturalistics in 1,579 "communes" (small administrative units).

The change in geographic distribution occurring over the past 25 years was evaluated by comparing the 1988-1989 results with those obtained from similar inquiries conducted by Couturier (1964) and the O.N.C. in 1978-l979 (unpubl.). Today, the Marmot is present in 493 communes (Tab. 1).

Except for a few isolated cases of disappearance, the geographic range has greatly increased since 1964 (Fig. 1). Couturier only mentioned the Marmot as being present in the interior Alps and in the northern Prealps. Today, owing to introductions, the species is found throughout the Alps as well as in the southern prealps. The most southern colony was established on the Cheiron, in de Prealps of Nice, fewer than 15 km from the Mediterranean Sea.

 

 

La distribuzione della Marmotta nelle Alpi Francesi nel 1988-1989 é stata determinata, per mezzo di un questionario inviato ai cacciatori, ai forestali ed ai naturalisti in 1579 Comuni.

Il cambiamento nella distribuzione geografica, verificatosi negli ultimi 25 anni é stato stimato comparando i risultati del1988-1989 con quelli ottenuti da indagini simili condotte da Couturier (1964) e l'ONC nel1978-79 (Non pubbl.)

Oggi la Marmotta é presente in 493 comuni (Tab. 1).

Eccetto qualche caso isolato di scomparsa la distribuzione geografica ha avuto un notevole incremento dal1964 (Fig. 1). Couturier cita la Marmotta solamente come presente nelle Alpi interne e nelle Prealpi del Nord.Oggi grazie alle introduzioni, la specie si trova in tutte le Alpi e Prealpi meridionali.La colonia più a Sud si é stabilita nel Cheiron, nelle Prealpi di Nizza, a meno di 15 Km dal Mar Mediterraneo.
