The Batyrevo relic colony of marmots is one of the few parts of meadow steppes in the Chuvash Republic. It is supposed that the steppe cenoses of the south-east of Chuvasia preserved the connection with the South Russion steppes (Andreyev, 1971). Apparently, the peculiarity of the flora on the given part, represented by the complex of Poa angustifolia-Stipa-Festuca associationes, was of great influence (Dimitriev, Gafurova, 1994). Leafhoppers, being obligatory sucking phytofags, are an important component in grassy associations. In May 1996 collections of leafhoppers were carried out by us in the marmot colony and adjoining territories. Four families of leafhoppers have been found: Aphrophoridae, Delphacidae, Cicadellidae, Tettigometridae. Right on the territory of the colony dry meadow species of leafhoppers prevailed: Ribautodelphax albostriata Fieb. (Delphacidae), Chlorita viridula Fieb.(Cicadellidae) and others. The most interesting find was the discovery of Tettigometra atra Hgb. (Tettigometridae), which is a wide spread species in the southern regions of the Palearctic. It is registered for Chuvashia for the first time. On the territory bordering on the reserve Metropis inermis Wagn. (Delphacidae) is a usual thing. It is an endemic of the western Scythian subdistrict of the scythian steppe region developing on Festuca. Delphacidae of Javesella obscurella Boh., J. dubia Kbm. prevailed on going down lands with mesophyton grasses.

The examination of other stepped territories of the republic (the Atticovo stepped slope of the Kozlovka region; the stepped slope to the Menya river of the Poretsk region; the environs of Shemalacovo in the Yalchiki region) has shown the prevailence of the steppe and meadow elements in the composition of the cicada complex. Meadow species: Delphacinus mesomelas Boh., Eurybregma nigrolineata Scott., Ribautodelphax albostriata Fieb. (Delphacidae); Doratura homophyla Flor., D. stylata Boh., Hephatus nanus H.-S. (Cicadellidae) are typical species of dry meadows. In the majority of cases they are linced with cereals in food chains and they can be found in all the examined parts. Out of the steppe species Metropis inermis is registered in all the parts. In the environs of Shemalacovo Diplocolenus frauenfeldi Fieb. (Cicadellidae) has been found. It is a steppe species of the southern Palearctic western area. Out of the rare species it is necessary to mark Eurybregma porcus Em. and Ribautodelphax ochreata Vilb. from the family of Delphacidae. They are found in the far south-east of Chuvashia, in the environs of Shemalakovo and registered for the Chuvash Republic for the first time.
