THE STATE OF STEPPE MARMOT POPULATION IN SUMY REGION OF UKRAINE

The works on reacclimatization of steppe marmots (Merzlikin and others, 1993) which are carried out till nowadays, have been started in Sumy region since 1987.

The results of settling are showed in the table.

At the environs of the villages of Riabina the steppe-marmots formed 2 settlements at the water-meadows of the Vorskla on the lightsoil.

One of them is located not far from the river on the hill (in the bend of the lake).

In spring, 1996, the inhabitants of one of the holes were found out not to go out after the hibernation.

It seems the animals perished from the flooding with the subsoil waters.
